Omni: Deluxe [Album Review]

Omni Deluxe Trouble In Mind Records [2016] Fire Drill Album Review: Atlanta’s Omni play a low-fi indie rock that has the similar post-punk vein of Parquet Courts but with a bit more laid back mood like Spoon. The band is comprised of guitarist Frankie Broyles (ex-Deerhunter, Balkans), bassist/vocalist Philip Frobos (ex-Carnivores) and drummer Billy Mitchell … Read more

Ryley Walker – “The Roundabout” [Video]

Ryley Walker definitely has potential and on his new record, Golden Sings That Have Been Sung (out 8/19 on Dead Oceans) he could just possibly land in our Top 50 of 2016. Following his excellent 2015’s Primrose Green, Walker continues to grow as a songwriter and Golden Sings is said to be a distinctly Chicago record and you can really feel the weight of that city’s influence upon first listen.

The video for his latest single “The Roundabout,” was directed, filmed and edited by Joe Martinez Jr. and is all about the fireworks. The video backs up the Chicago theme and probably will remind many of past 4th holiday celebrations!

The Donkeys share “Endless Summer” cover

San Diego’s The Donkeys have just hit the road for a brief trip aptly named the “Endless Summer” tour, joined by The Hold Steady’s Steve Selvidge on guitar. To coincide with the summertime jaunt they have released a new track – a cover of the theme from the 1966 cult-class surf film, The Endless Summer. … Read more

Free Pizza: Berlin, DE [Album Review]

Free Pizza Berlin, DE BUFU Records [2016] Fire Drill Album Review: If you have 14 minutes then you have enough time to check out this mini 7 song album from Boston’s Free Pizza. This disjointed slightly off-kilter delivery reminds of classics from The Cleaners From Venus and Television Personalities, as the songs have a very … Read more

Mumblr: The Never Ending Get Down [Album Review]

Mumblr The Never Ending Get Down Fleeting Youth Records [2016] Fire Drill Album Review: The slow-fast, quiet-loud combo that takes place on Mumblr’s new record, The Never Ending Get Down, creates a fantastic and entertaining dynamic. The Philadelphia foursome try to break some from their earlier punk/emo tag as they incorporate a much more unique … Read more

Told Slant: Going By [Album Review]

Told Slant Going By Double Double Whammy [2016] Fire Drill Album Review: How about a cross between Modest Mouse, Sufjan Stevens and Hayden? That is exactly what I hear on the new engagingly addicting sophomore record from Told Slant. The band is really the songwriting project of Felix Walworth as these songs capture emotions around … Read more

Whitney: Light Upon The Lake [Album Review]

Whitney Light Upon The Lake Secretly Canadian [2016] Fire Note Says: Whitney deliver with a timeless approach on their warm debut. Album Review: When the Smith Westerns called it quits in 2014, I was somewhat bummed because I thought the group continued to show promise on every record. With the break, several of the formally … Read more

White Lung: Paradise [Album Review]

White Lung Paradise Domino Records [2016] Fire Drill Album Review: White Lung have to be one of the more under the radar great female fronted rock bands currently on the scene today. Beth Orton – “1973” [Video]

Beth Orton has went back to her roots on her new album, Kidsticks, as it was inspired both by the wide-open nature of Los Angeles and the spirit of Beth’s earliest recordings (electronic work with producers like William Orbit, Andrew Weatherall and Kieran Hebden as well as groove-based music with Red Snapper).

Kidsticks was co-produced by Beth and Andrew Hung from F*ck Buttons. It was recorded with various musician friends of Beth’s in California (including George Lewis Jr. from Twin Shadow on electric guitars, Grizzly Bear’s Chris Taylor on backing vocals and bass guitar and Dustin O’Halloran from A Winged Victory for the Sullen who provided piano and string arrangements). Vocals were recorded by Alain Johannes (Queens of the Stone Age/Mark Lanagan Band) and mixed by David Wrench (Caribou/Hot Chip).
