Hooveriii: A Round Of Applause [Album Review]

Los Angeles psych-rock band Hooveriii (pronounced “Hoover Three”) have returned quickly with their third album A Round of Applause. It is a record that expands out from the more jam-based psych on last year’s Water For The Frogs that presented 7 songs with an average of about 5 minutes long. A Round Of Applause offers 11 songs and reduces that average song length to a bit over 3.5 minutes. This more concise approach propels Hooveriii forward as they combine a modern progressive rock thrust with more vocal hooks that pull you into each track’s swirling mix.

Hooveriii’s growth provides instrumentation excitement around every corner. The harder edged “Out Of My Time” has some King Gizzard vibes while other tracks like “Water Lily” and “The Pearl” time warp back with experimental rock that would fit in nicely next to a Gentle Giant track. The band has the ability to really rock out while capturing the moment with several memorable harmonies. This timeless and multi-rock approach showcases Hooveriii locking in on their identity as A Round Of Applause gets better with every spin.

KEY TRACKS
“Out Of My Time” / “Time – The Outlaw” / “Twisted And Vile”

  1. Uhhh, it’s a really, really good album. It made my night fun from boring and mundane. Hats off to the album arrangement, intricate melody’s, layers on layers of groove with impeccable timing and rhythm changes. Just a good listen all the way through. One of the better and surprising complete albums I’ve heard in a while.
