Fire Drill Album Review: A few chords into Eric Bachmann’s new record might make you think that your tracks are mislabeled because the Archers of Loaf and Crooked Fingers frontman is not brining you a solo dose of indie rock at all on his self-titled debut under his own name. Instead, you get a very slow moving piano and pedal steel guitar on opening track “Belong To You,” which sets you straight from the start: this is a new beginning. Bachmann’s raw slightly gruff voice is present but this record is personal and exposes his human side more so than ever before. The record not only is well thought out but uses space perfectly to keep everything in order and rolling. This direction also shouldn’t surprise longtime fans as he has been in Neko Case’s touring band now for years and you can tell it has had some influence. It is refreshing to hear this veteran turn out an album that doesn’t need his past angst to have fire and highlights his ability to step back upfront to the mic. This is a great start to a new era!
