The Flashing Lights: Where The Change Is (Translucent Light Blue Wax

The Flashing Lights were founded in Halifax, Nova Scotia by Matt Murphy following the breakup of his seminal band, The Super Friendz in 1997. Murphy had met bassist Henri Sangalang back when they were in grade 8 and the pair moved to Toronto, where they recruited Stephen Pitkin on drums and Gaven Dianda on keyboards, tambourine and harmonica.

The sound of The Flashing Lights echoes the high-energy rave-ups of 1960’s British rock like The Yardbirds and Screaming Lord Sutch but through the lens of late 70’s new wave. During their five-year run, The Flashing Lights released two albums and an EP: Where the Change Is (1999), Elevature EP (2000) and Sweet Release (2001).

Where the Change Is was recorded in 1999 by Daryl Smith at Chemical Sound in Toronto – a studio that produced legendary albums by Death From Above, Sloan and Change of Heart. 1999 was just at the tail end of the analogue era. Where the Change Is was recorded to 2” tape and in 2021, it was remastered by João Carvalho using the original 1/4” tape mix downs so the songs sound better than ever.

Murderecords now will include The Flashing Lights on its roster. Hardcore fans of the band finally get to have a copy of Where the Change Is on vinyl (pressed on translucent light blue vinyl in a limited edition of 500 copies).
