The Gaslight Anthem: iTunes Session [Album Review]

The Gaslight Anthem
iTunes Session
SideOneDummy Records [2011]

The new iTunes session from The Gaslight Anthem showcases the band’s influences and provides fans with an excellent studio recording of tracks they may have previously experienced live. It’s probably no surprise that Brian Fallon and the band cover songs from The Who, Tom Petty, Pearl Jam, and The Animals, delivering these classics with a fairly straightforward approach infused with Gaslight Anthem’s signature mojo.

Each track is executed with precision and care, underscoring the band’s deep respect for the original songs. This EP also includes an unreleased original song, “Our Father’s Sons,” which has been in their repertoire since the ’59 Sound days and serves as a reminder of the quality of that record. “Boxer” from American Slang makes an appearance as well, but in a more mellow version that complements the song and may even surpass the original in this tempo.

It’s great to see The Gaslight Anthem making the most of their iTunes Session, offering a solid EP that every fan should not only listen to but also eagerly anticipate. This record also underscores that the band is still at the top of their game, leaving us excited just thinking about what new material they might deliver next.
