Fire Drill Album Review: Not sure if it is the best band name (or maybe it is brilliant) out there but don’t let that discourage you from checking out Sophie Allison’s Soccer Mommy. For Young Hearts is Soccer Mommy’s third record and first for the quality independent Orchid Tapes label. For Young Hearts is perfect for your headphones as its subject matter hits on topics most of us can relate to or at least remember – young love – and the pain it can bring.

What I like about this record is that Soccer Mommy has a pleasant chill flow on the surface but Allison’s lyrics can be intense and direct like on “3 AM At A Party” when she sings “I wish you didn’t sleep with her when you were drunk.” On “Blood Honey” there are these little jazzy moments that keep the track foot tapping peppy but the song is all about the actual struggles in relationships. For Young Hearts is Soccer Mommy’s most confident record to date and moves out of a bedroom pop tag for me with its forward production.

The sincerity is real here and it reminds of Julien Baker’s album that came out last year, with both its style and involved song structures. It would be easy for Soccer Mommy to crank out 2 and 3 minute numbers but Allison lets her tracks evolve past the 4 and 5 minute mark. This is a record that should be played more than once as it doesn’t take long for it to hook you.
