Fire Drill Album Review: I am a sucker for jangly indie singer/songwriters which is why Pete Astor is right up my listening alley. If you really know your stuff, you might know Astor previously of The Loft and The Weather Prophet which were on Creation Records back in the 80’s. Since then, he has released several solo records and some more experimental material, while also teaching at University of Westminsteras. Spilt Milk represents some of his most simplified work and a return to a more pop sound as the album was recorded onto ½ inch tape at the home studio of James Hoare (Ultimate Painting, The Proper Ornaments, Veronica Falls) with James playing guitar, bass, drums, keyboards and singing backing vocals. There is nothing here that will knock you out as fresh or cutting edge but Astor is a great storyteller with a sound that is like The Go-Betweens meets Robyn Hitchcock. At the end of the day, Pete Astor’s likeable voice will just bring you into his world that showcases his veteran status and will have you reaching for the repeat button more than once.
