In my humble opinion, Thee Oh Sees’ Drop LP was not their strongest effort. Having reviewed every single Sees LP since Putrifiers II—including Singles Collection Volume Three and the RSD 2014 Moon Sick EP—Drop’s 60’s garage theme was easy to spot, but the strength and consistency of their previous material was lacking.
Well, if you work at Dwyer’s pace then—as any Thee Oh Sees fan should know—new material is usually just a year or so off and today this rings true. Thee Oh Sees (consisting of John Dwyer, Tim Hellman, Nick Murray, Chris Woodhouse, and Brigid Dawson) have announced Drop’s follow up Mutilator Defeated At Last. If just looking at the artwork hasn’t gotten you excited enough then album opener “Web” will probably do the trick. The track’s fast-paced garage rock and Dwyers hellish vocals transport the listener to the surface of an alien planet.
Utilizing the production talents of John Golden (Soundgarden, Melvins, Ty Segall), Mutilator Defeated At Last seems to be right on track to be one hell of a Thee Oh Sees album. With the number of albums in their catalog, that is a pretty exciting thought.
