In preparation for her solo performance at the UK’s Shellac curated Nightmare Before Christmas festival, Kim Deal surprised her hometown of Dayton, Ohio with a hour open mic performance at the South Park Tavern Wednesday night. Not only did she play a solo electric version of “Cannonball” but also another Breeders fan favorite “Fortunately Gone” from 1990’s Pod.
One of the more unexpected tunes of the set was Deal’s cover of This Mortal Coil’s “You And Your Sister” which was spot on in the very intimate crowd setting of around 30 lucky patrons. Deal also showcased her acoustic talents with some new songs that had plenty of spark as well as a rousing version of “Pacer” from her 1995 band The Amps with help from Motel Beds drummer Ian Kaplan. It was a great show for everyone that attended and if you are near the Shellac festival on Dec 1 make sure to catch Kim’s set right after Wire!
