Angel Olsen
My Woman
Jagjaguwar [2016]
Fire Drill Album Review: Angel Olsen’s third album makes a loud, brash entrance; My Woman’s first three tracks are top notch, including the remarkable “Shut Up Kiss Me.” That track will make you stop what you’re doing and take notice. It sounds like a Blondie song with its in-charge vocals and rock affectations. “Shut Up Kiss Me” is brimming with a fun attitude and catchy guitar licks that will propel it to my best-songs-of-2016 list. It’s a shame that the rest of the album doesn’t live up to that potential, as it often falls into ponderous ballads in which Olsen seems to moan and languish, rather than strut like she does on the first three tracks. There’s a lot to like and appreciate on My Woman, but at the end of the day I’m not sure I’ll make a full-length return trip.
