Who: Hot Snakes is John Reis and Rick Froberg which together are responsible for groups Drive Like Jehu, Rocket from the Crypt, Sultans, The Obits and The Night Marchers. Jericho Sirens, is the fourth album (and first in 14 years) from the San Diego-based punk rock n roll band.
Sound: Hot Snakes early records brought back the post-hardcore grit that Reis and Froberg were originally known for. Jericho Sirens picks up the energy right where they left off in 2004 and can join hands with the current crop of bands like Metz and Pissed Jeans.
TFN Final Take: I don’t know that a Hot Snakes reunion record ever seemed possible but you can tell these guys missed the jam. Jericho Sirens is a ripper from beginning to end and has a youthful vigor. It is a pure post-hardcore dream that never pulls its foot off the gas. All the instrumentation is tight and played without flaws. I am not sure if Jericho Sirens has any truly memorable tracks that I will turn back on in 6 months but the building groove and snarl of “Six Wave Hold-Down” is a good contender. Overall, it is great to hear Hot Snakes back on the scene as these veteran artists know perfectly how to strike your nerves – loudly!
