Fascinating: Picture This [Album Review]

Fascinating
Picture This
Quality Time/Jurassic Pop Records [2017]

Who: Fascinating is one of our favorite Ohio “slop-pop” groups that is fronted by Quality Time Records main man Ricky Hamilton.

Sound: Fascinating plays a delightfully fuzzed up lo-fi post-punk that is gritty, determined and quick.

TFN Final Take: Clearly, TFN enjoys distorted catchy pop tunes. You don’t need to scan the site very long to know that most of the writers here are into anything Robert Pollard touches and the California grind that is Ty Segall and company. Fascinating and Quality Time Records have quickly joined this elite group with their excellent new record Picture This. The album follows last year’s solid Dice Game structure but Picture This tightens the pop madness bolts and rolls out an even more grooving distorted ride. Also when you are talking about a total run time that just passes 15 minutes there is absolutely no filler. On tracks like the 1:38 “Dangerous Times,” you understand this a bit more, as you get fast shifting pogo riffs and the plea of Hamilton when he sings “all I want is to spend the night with you while the world as we know it falls to pieces right in front of us – and I know, we’re livin’ in dangerous times!” Simple and to the point but right on key and those type of little memorable lines are why Fascinating stay in your head. If you are looking for a buzz band that will fill your speakers with a sing-along wall of distortion then Picture This is a release you need to hear and Fascinating is a band you should know.
